Oral disease is the most frequently diagnosed health problem for pets. An astounding 80% of dogs and 70% of cats show signs of oral disease by age 3, according to the American Veterinary Dental Society.
Oral disease begins with a buildup of bacteria in your pet’s mouth. Bacteria, combined with saliva and food debris between the tooth and gum, can cause plaque formations that accumulate on the teeth. As bacteria grow in the plaque and as calcium salts are deposited, plaque turns to tarter.
Without proper preventative or therapeutic care, plaque and tartar buildup leads to periodontal disease. Left untreated, periodontal disease can cause oral pain, dysfunction, tooth loss and systemic complications. Also, the inflammation and infection associated with periodontal disease may damage other organs such as heart, liver and kidneys or lead to other serious health problems.
Common indications of oral disease include bad breath, a change in eating habits, pawing at the face and sometimes swelling around the eyes or muzzle. For prevention, our doctors recommend having your pet’s teeth examined every 6-12 months to identify potential problems. Also, regular dental cleanings and at home maintenance can make a substantial difference in your pet’s dental and oral health. Our team members will be happy to answer any questions you have regarding your pet’s dental and oral care.
